As dietary supplements may be advertised to promote health but according to a study conducted by University of Colorado, excessive use of over-the-counter vitamins and other dietary supplements may raise the risk of malignancies, The exact molecular mechanisms are unknown; however, the causal role of excessive dietary supplements and higher risk of developing cancer is well-established.

The study has shown that increased intake of beta-keratin more than recommended dosage actually increased the 20% risk of lung cancer and cardiovascular events.  Increased risk of colonic polyps was found to be associated with excessive folate use. The results were based on the experimental studies, and the results are to be confirmed in human subjects.

People can get recommended dietary doses of vitamins by consuming well-balanced diet and most of the adults actually do not need for their general well-being.
