IIT Bhubaneswar is an Institute of National Importance declared as such under the Institutes of Technology Act, 1961 to provide for education and research in various branches of engineering, technology, science & arts. The permanent campus of the Institute is spreading over 936 Acres of land. It is situated at the foot of Barunei Hill, which is well known for its rich historical values. The campus provides a unique serene and pollution free academic environment with all basic modern amenities. All the IITs are administered centrally by the IIT Council, an apex body established by the Government of India. The Minister of Human Resource & Development, Government of India, is the Chairman of the Council.

Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati, the sixth member of the IIT fraternity, was established in 1994. The academic programme of IIT Guwahati commenced in 1995. At present the Institute has eleven departments and five inter-disciplinary academic centres covering all the major engineering, science and humanities disciplines, offering BTech, BDes, MA, MDes, MTech, MSc and PhD programmes. Within a short period of time, IIT Guwahati has been able to build up world class infrastructure for carrying out advanced research and has been equipped with state-of-the-art scientific and engineering instruments.
