A team of researchers from University of Maryland found that Young adults who eat more fermented foods have fewer social anxiety symptoms. The study is published in the Psychiatry Research journal.

They studied  dietary habits of 700 college students. People who ate more pickles, sauerkraut or kimchi had less social anxiety. The study found a link between pickled foods and social anxiety, noting that those that regularly ate pickles, kimchi, sauerkraut and more were found to have reduced "neuroticism," the Independent reported.

Researcher Matthew Hilimire said that it is likely that the probiotics in the fermented foods are favorably changing the environment in the gut, and changes in the gut in turn influence social anxiety.

He added that he thinks that it is absolutely fascinating that the microorganisms in one's gut can influence his/ her mind.
