The Tuberculosis Research Centre (TRC), a permanent institute under the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), is an internationally recognized institution for Tuberculosis (TB) research. It is a Supranational Reference Laboratory and a WHO Collaborating Centre for TB Research and Training. Recently, an International Centre for Excellence in Research (ICER) in collaboration with NIH was established at the Centre.

The National Institute of Pharmaceutical Education & Research (NIPER) is an Institute of National Importance by an Act of Parliament under the aegis of Department of Pharmaceuticals, Ministry of Chemicals & Fertilizers, Government of India. The institute is located at S.A.S. Nagar, Punjab adjoining Chandigarh the City Beautiful.

ICMR has established eight Biomedical Informatics centres at SGPGI Lukhnow, PGI Chandigarh, AIIMS New Delhi, NIRRH Mumbai, TRC Chennai, NICED Kolkata, NIN Hyderabad, RMRC Patna and a coordinating unit at ICMR Hqrds, New Delhi. The centres were established with objectives:
*To develop new methodologies and solutions for prevention and amelioration of diseases of national importance
*To develop and support databases of specific clinical findings and Biomedical data

Recognising the high incidence of tuberculosis around Dharmasthala, a modern TB Sanatorium was established at Laila under the aegis of the Shri Dharmasthala Manjunatheshwara Medical Trust. Now it has been turned into a general hospital since April 2003 as private institutions are not allowed to treat tuberculosis patients.
