The Assam Rifles is the oldest paramilitary force of the Indian Army, dating back to 1835 under the British Raj, raised under the name Cachar Levy. The total area of Cantonment Board Ramgarh is 9312.38 acres comprising civil and military area. As per census 2011 the total population is 88781. Presently the total population might have crossed approx 01 lacs. In there are two Regimental Centers situated within i.e the Punjab Regimental Centre and the Sikh Regimental Centre.

The President of India gave assent to The Central Universities Act, 2009 that envisages establishing and incorporating universities for teaching and research in the various states. The Central University of Jharkhand came into being under this Act on 1st of March, 2009. The Visitor of the Central University of Jharkhand, Her Excellency, Shrimati Pratibha Devisingh Patil, appointed Dr. Darlando T. Khathing, an internationally renowned scientist and a distinguished academic administrator, as its first Vice Chancellor.
