Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research originated as École de Médicine de Pondichérry established by the French Government in the year 1823.  This medical school was converted into Dhanvantari Medical College at the time of de facto transfer of Pondicherry to Government of India.  This Medical College was later upgraded into Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER).

Regional Centre for Biotechnology (RCB), an institution of education, training and research is established by the Department of Biotechnology, Government of India under the auspices of UNESCO. The Rajiv Gandhi Centre for Biotechnology (RGCB) is a growing phenomenon. Located in Thiruvananthapuram, the capital city of Kerala, RGCB began in 1990 amongst humble surroundings as a small charitable society called the Centre for Development of Education, Science and Technology (C-DEST). In 1991, recognizing its potential, the C-DEST was made a “Grant-in-Aid” institute of the Government of Kerala and renamed as Rajiv Gandhi Centre for Development of Education, Science and Technology (RGC-DEST), becoming the first institute in the country to be named after Sri Rajiv Gandhi, the young illustrious and visionary former Prime Minster of India.

On August 7, 2014 vide extraordinary Gazette notification Part –II Section-3, Sub Section(ii) New Delhi Thursday August 7, 2014, Department of AIDS Control has been merged with Department of Health & Family Welfare and now be known as National AIDS Control Organization (NACO). As per the amendment in allocation of business rules vide Cabinet secretariat’s Notification Number- 1/21/35/2014-Cab dated December 8, 2014,Department of AYUSH has been made Ministry of Ayurveda, Yoga and Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha and Homeopathy (AYUSH) with focused attention on development of education and research in Ayurveda, Yoga & naturopathy, Unani, Siddha and Homoeopathy systems. Now Ministry of Health and Family Welfare comprises the following two departments, each of which is headed by a Secretary to the Government of India:-  Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) is attached office of the Department of Health & Family Welfare and has subordinate offices spread all over the country. The DGHS renders technical advice on all Medical and Public Health matters and is involved in the implementation of various Health Services.

NIMS Institute of Pharmacy is approved by AICTE (All India Council for technical Education), Government of India. It offers undergraduate, postgraduate and Ph. D. programmes. The Institute has its separate building in the campus with spacious well equipped laboratories for each discipline and specialization. Pharma D. course has been designed on the lines of some universities in USA.

The journey of Indian Agricultural Research Institute (IARI), popularly known as Pusa Institute, began in 1905 at Pusa (Bihar) with the generous grant of 30,000 pounds from an American philanthropist, Mr. Henry Phipps. The institute was then known as Agricultural Research Institute (ARI) which functioned with five departments, namely Agriculture, Cattle Breeding, Chemistry, Economic Botany and Mycology. Bacteriology unit was added in 1907.  The name of ARI was changed to Imperial Institute of Agricultural Research in 1911 and, in 1919 it was renamed as Imperial Agricultural Research Institute. Following a devastating earth quake on 15th January 1934, the institute was shifted to Delhi on 29th July 1936. Post independence, the institute has been renamed as Indian Agricultural Research Institute (IARI)

 The BCG Vaccine Laboratory, Chennai is working under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare of the Government of India. It was established on 1st May, 1948. The activities of this Laboratory are as follows: Manufacture of Freeze Dried BCG Vaccine for the control of Childhood Tuberculosis and Tuberculous Meningitis in children and supply to Expanded Programme of Immunization (EPI) of the Government of India and to other needy medical faculties/ Hospitals; Manufacture and supply of Freeze Dried BCG Therapeutic (40mg) for cancer Chemotherapy especially Carcinoma of Urinary Bladder.
