The National Institute of Pharmaceutical Education and Research (NIPER) at S.A.S. Nagar (Mohali) created as a centre of excellence in imparting higher education, research and development in pharmaceutical sciences and is the first Institute of its kind in the country.

Government of India has set up six new National Institutes of Pharmaceuticals Education and Research (NIPERs) under the aegis of Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilizers, Department of Pharmaceuticals, at Ahmedabad. Guwahati, Hyderabad, Hajipur, Kolkata and Rae Bareli. These are presently being run with the help of Mentor Institutes. The Institutes are required to be established on their own.
