  • Finasteride and Dutasteride are in the family of drugs known as 5alpha-reductase inhibitors (5A-RIs). They are often prescribed for the treatment of male pattern hair loss, known as alopecia, and benign prostate enlargement (BPH). A new study has revealed that these commonly prescribed medicines may lead to adverse sexual side effects such as loss of libido or erectile dysfunction. The study  appear online in Endocrine Reviews and Metabolic Disorders.

  • A 40 to 80 day treatment with the antiparasitic medication benznidazole significantly reduced parasite activity in the blood, but not progression, of serious heart problems over a 5-year period among patients with established Chagas disease (CD) cardiomyopathy, results of the BENEFIT trial show.

  • Siemens Healthcare has launched three new scalable haematology systems: the ADVIA 360 System, ADVIA 560 System and ADVIA 560 AL System.
    The systems offer fast, high quality CBC testing, running up to 60 samples per hour. Automatic anti-clogging and cleaning procedures are employed to ensure results reliability. Along with automated maintenance, this reduces manual procedures and biohazard exposure. Other features include option for manual or automatic calibration procedures, a cap-piercing function for accurate and safer sampling, a multilingual operating menu and bidirectional LIS communication for easy patient data transfer between laboratories and minimised paper-based work lists.

  • A new study has now revealed that obesity leads to a stiffening of the meshwork material that surrounds fat cells in the breast, called the extracellular matrix, and these biomechanical changes creates the right conditions for the growth of tumors. The findings are published in Science Translational Medicine.

  • Nanoengineers at the University of California-San Diego have developed fish-shaped microrobots using an innovative 3D printing technology that can soon help deliver drugs efficiently to the targeted areas in the human body. Microfish can swim around efficiently in liquids, are chemically powered by hydrogen peroxide and magnetically controlled.  The research, led by Professors Shaochen Chen and Joseph Wang of the NanoEngineering Department at the UC San Diego, was published in the Aug. 12 issue of the journal Advanced Materials.
