National Institute of Cancer prevention and research (NICPR) was initially established as Cytology Research Centre (CRC) by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) in 1979, and was elevated to the level of an Institute in 1989. It was granted national status in 2016 acknowledging its mandate and contributions towards cancer prevention. The institute has broadened its horizon to cater to prevention of prevalent cancers in the country.

Tuberculosis (TB) has always been recognized as an important Public Health problem. The ICMR survey of 1955-58 showed that there were 4 sputum smear positive cases and 16 radiologically positive cases of pulmonary TB per 1000 population and this problem was equally distributed in rural and urban areas. Considering the magnitude of the problem, a need was felt for formulating a programme addressing these issues. Hence, the NATIONAL TUBERCULOSIS INSTITUTE was established in 1959 at Bangalore by the Government of India, in the AVALON building made available by erstwhile Maharaja of Mysore.

National Chemical Laboratory (CSIR-NCL), Pune, established in 1950, is a constituent laboratory of Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR). CSIR-NCL is a science and knowledge based research, development and consulting organization. It is internationally known for its excellence in scientific research in chemistry and chemical engineering as well as for its outstanding track record of industrial research involving partnerships with industry from concept to commercialization.

The CSIR-Traditional Knowledge Digital Library (CSIR-TKDL) Unit is engaged in the protection and preservation of India’s vast traditional medicine knowledge present in ancient texts by converting the information into modern languages. It aims to prevent the misappropriation of Indian Systems of Medicine through patenting at the international level. CSIR-TKDL Unit is a unit under the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), an autonomous body with the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research (Ministry of Science and Technology).
