Anna University was established on 4th September 1978 as a unitary type of University. It offers higher education in Engineering, Technology and allied Sciences relevant to the current and projected needs of the society. Besides promoting research and disseminating knowledge gained therefrom, it fosters cooperation between the academic and industrial communities.The University was formed by bringing together and integrating two well-known technical institutions in the city of Madras.

The Department of Biotechnology (DBT), Govt of India and International Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (ICGEB) have jointly set-up a collaborative centre to perform cutting-edge research in the field of bioenergy using genomics, metagenomics, synthetic biology and systems biology approaches.

CSIR has set up a Unit for Research and Development of Information Products (CSIR-URDIP) at Pune to work in the area of Scientific Informatics (ChemBioinformatics/ Patent Informatics/ Phytoinformatics/ Toxinformatics) and related software development projects.
