National Institutes of Pharmaceutical Education and Research (NIPERs)under the aegis of Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilizers, Department of Pharmaceuticals are institutes of National importance created by an Act of Parliament with a mandate to nurture and promote quality and excellence in pharmaceutical education and research as to create human resources of a higher caliber for the Indian pharmaceutical industry, towards making India a global leader in innovation and Drug Discovery while continue to offer leadership in formulations. The NIPERs- Guwahati, Hajipur, Hyderabad& Raebareli are set up during 2007-08 and are functioning under premier mentor institutions and are being developed as independent institutions soon. The NIPER Mohali is having its own campus. Now applications are invited for the post of Director of these NIPERs.

In an effort to promote science and industry-academia collaboration, Zoetis and National Institute of Pharmaceutical Education and Research (NIPER) are coming together in a joint research fellowship program to be carried out at NIPER, SAS Nagar. Zoetis, the leading global animal health company is a world leader in discovering, developing, manufacturing and marketing veterinary medicines and vaccines complemented by diagnostic products and genetic tests supported by technical services. NIPER, SAS Nagar is the first national level institute in pharmaceutical sciences with a proclaimed objective of becoming a centre of excellence for advanced studies and research in pharmaceutical sciences. The Government of India has declared NIPER as an Institute of National Importance.

S.D. College Institutions, run by S.D. College Educational Society Barnala, are amongst the prestigious institutions of the region which serves to educate the students of this backward area for the last fifty six years. S.D. college institutions have made amazing progress and development under the guidance of their founder President Dr. Raghubir Parkash and their founder member Pandit Anand Sarup and also all the other members who have worked with co-ordinated approach towards the establishment of these institutions. Originally an arts college i.e. S.D. College was started, the foundation of which was laid by Dr. Raghubir Parkash in 1956.

At Jalandhar , Pt. Mehr Chand an embodiment of self-sacrifice , honesty and untiring efforts followed in the footsteps of Maharishi Dayanand . He was convinced that the education was incomplete without technical education. Having started a high school and then a college, he diverted his energies towards uplifting of technical education. He had a plan of starting a polytechnic with diploma courses in engineering. He actually laid the foundation of a technical institution to be run on the same lines as the Govt. School of Engineering, Rasul on 12th March 1944, but he was not destined to see it grow. He died soon after. No steps were taken in this direction till after the partition when Dayanand Industrial School was started in an evacuated tannery near Bhargava Camp under ministry of labour and employment with Shri Hand Raj Kundra as the first Principal. The Vocational trades organized were footwear , leader goods , carpentry , sports goods and sports leather. That was the time when the Indian Govt. attached great importance to this type of training with the two-fold objective of encouraging indigenous production and providing employment to the displaced persons.
