G.B. Pant National Institute of Himalayan Environment & Sustainable Development (formerly known as G.B. Pant Institute of Himalayan Environment & Development) was established in 1988-89, during the birth centenary year of Bharat Ratna Pt. Govind Ballabh Pant, as an autonomous Institute of the Ministry of Environment, Forest & Climate Change (MoEF&CC), Govt. of India, which has been identified as a focal agency to advance scientific knowledge, to evolve integrated management strategies, demonstrate their efficacy for conservation of natural resources, and to ensure environmentally sound development in the entire Indian Himalayan Region (IHR).

With a coastline of about 3,500 miles, inland sources in Rajasthan and Little Rann of Kutch, and the rock salt mines in Mandi, India have possibilities of attaining a high position in salt production among the salt producing countries of the world. As is known, apart from being an indispensable item of food, salt is an important raw material for the manufacture of several heavy chemicals e.g. soda ash, caustic soda and chlorine. Besides, salt is used in food processing industries, such as fish curing, meat packing, dairy products and fruit and vegetable canning.

Promoting basic research in Science and Engineering and to provide financial assistance to persons engaged in such research, academic institutions, research and development laboratories, industrial concerns and other agencies for such research and for matters connected therewith or incidental thereto are the primary and distinctive mandate of the Board.  SERB aims to build up best management systems which would match the best global practices in the area of promotion and funding of basic research.

National Institute of Ocean Technology (NIOT), Chennai, a technical arm of the Ministry of Earth Sciences, Govt. of India, is functioning with broad objective of promoting technology development in activities related to Ocean Engineering and Ocean Resource utilization. The Institute has taken up various research activities in the area of Ocean Observation Systems, Offshore Structures / Island Desalination, Ocean Acoustics, Ballast water managements, Seawater Quality Monitoring Programme and Marine Biotechnology. This wide spectrum of research activities provides opportunities to bright young men and women in the form of direct Junior Research Fellowships (JRFs), Senior Research Fellowships (SRFs) and Research Associate (RAs) for training in methods of research under the expert guidance of scientists working in the organization.
