SMIMER was established in the year 2000 with an annual intake of 100 students, after obtaining permission from the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, Government of India, New Delhi vide its letter NO. U 12012/34/99-Me(P). This institute was shifted to its modern building at Umarwada in the year 2001.

SKU Health Centre, The Health centre caters to the needs of students, staff, non-teaching staff, visiting faculty of the University and to a limited extend to the needs of the surrounding cluster of villages. The Health centre as yet does not have in-patient therapy units. An expansion of the physical infrastructure of the Health centre is under way and when the work is completed, limited in-patient services will also be offered. There are three Medical Officers manning the Health centre.

Upto Sixty five (65) (39 for Master’s Degree Course/Six months clinical training and 26 for Ph.D. Course) nominations are to be sent to the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission for final selection to be made by them.

National Institute of Nutrition (NIN) was founded by Sir Robert McCarrison in the year 1918 as ‘Beri-Beri’ Enquiry Unit in a single room laboratory at the Pasteur Institute, Coonoor, Tamil Nadu. Within a short span of seven years, this unit blossomed into a "Deficiency Disease Enquiry" and later in 1928, emerged as full-fledged "Nutrition Research Laboratories" (NRL) with Dr. McCarrison as its first Director. It was shifted to Hyderabad in 1958.
