National Institute of Mental Health and Neuro Sciences is a multidisciplinary Institute for patient care and academic pursuit in the frontier area of Mental Health and Neuro Sciences. The Lunatic Asylum which came into being in the latter part of the 19th Century was renamed as Mental Hospital in 1925 by the erstwhile Government of Mysore. This hospital and All India Institute of Mental Health established in 1954 by Government of India were amalgamated on 27th December 1974, and thus was formed the autonomous National Institute of Mental Health and Neuro Sciences (NIMHANS).

The year was 1993 when T. John College with its premises in Campbell Road, Austin Town, Bangalore – 47 begun. The college started by Dr. Thomas P John, offered a 3 year BHM (Hotel Management) Degree course to 24 students to start with.  The college also offered the BBM and BSc (CMS) courses. Since a humble beginning in 1993, there has been no looking back and every year the college crosses new milestones. Two decades later the college premises has expanded to include new departments and blocks and spread over an area of 20 acres of land. Cosmopolitan and secular in ethos and philosophy. T. John Group of Institutions attracts students from all over India and the neighboring countries.

The Institute of Stem Cell Sciences and Regenerative Medicine (inStem), is a premier research centre carrying out frontier research in the field stem cell biology. inStem has initiated a collaborative program of research with the National Centre for Biological Sciences and the National Institute for Mental Health and Neurosciences. The program aims to understand the cellular and molecular basis of mental illness with a long-term goal to develop new therapies. The program involves generation and analysis of cellular models using patient derived human induced pluripotent stem cells (HiPSCs) and its differentiated derivatives.
