NIRBI moved from the rented premises at No. 3 Kyd Street to its own establishment at P-33, C.I.T. Road, Scheme XM, Beliaghata, Kolkata 700010, adjacent to the Infectious Diseases Hospital. The unique feature of this Institute is that it conducts basic research and applied clinical and epidemiological research on diarrhoeal diseases under the same roof. This Institute has its basic science set up with well equipped, modern technological facilities in different disciplines such as bacteriology, virology, parasitology, biochemistry, pathophysiology, molecular biology, electron microscopy, immunology and biochemistry.

Post : Consultant

Consultant (Proteomics- Scientific-Medical/Non-Medical)
Applications are invited for the above position to spearhead high-impact research in Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) in bacterial pathogens. The candidate will bring in-depth expertise in quantitative proteomics, post-translational modifications, and LC-MS-based method development to advance our understanding of microbial resistance mechanisms. The ideal candidate will lead the design and execution of advanced LC-MS/MS-based workflows for both discovery and targeted proteomics (TMT, PRM, DIA, DDA), post-translational modifications including phosphoproteome analysis and absolute quantification.

Educational Qualifications and expertise needed.
(i) Ph.D. in Life Sciences, Biotechnology, Biochemistry, or a closely related discipline, focusing on proteomics, mass spectrometry, or systems biology.
(ii) Ph.D. will be considered 4 years’ experience (irrespective of the duration taken to complete the degree). MPH/ M. Tech/ ME/ M. Pharma will not be considered as any experience.
(iii) A minimum of 6 years of postdoctoral research experience from a reputed university/ research institute with a demonstrated track record of excellence in quantitative proteomics, systems biology, and LC-MS method development.
(iv) Expertise in mass spectrometry-based proteomics and metabolomics, with a focus on LC-MS method development, workflow optimization, and PTM profiling. Proficiency in both quantitative and targeted proteomics, enabling absolute quantification of low- abundance proteins. Specialized in advanced single-cell and cell-type-specific proteomics for precision biomarker discovery and systems-level insights.
(v) Proven expertise in Orbitrap-based mass spectrometry platforms, including Tribrid Orbitrap, Q-Orbitraps, and/or Q-ToFs.
(vi) Hands-on experience in complex sample preparation (biofluids, cells, tissues), peptide labeling (TMT/iTRAQ), and multidimensional chromatography (RP, SCX, IIILIC, SEC).

(vii) Having an in-depth understanding of quantitative proteomics workflows (PRM, DIA, DDA, label-free), including post-translational modification analysis (phospho, acetylation, ubiquitination, etc.).
(viii) Proficiency in data processing and statistical analysis software (e.g., Proteome Discoverer, Spectronaut, Maxquant, Perseus etc.), with the ability to integrate and interpret large-scale datasets.
(ix) Experience working in multidisciplinary teams involving microbiology, chemical biology, Infectious biology, and drug development.
(x) Proven ability to work seamlessly across domains—partnering with clinicians, microbiologists, and data scientists to drive impactful outcomes in collaborative, translational research settings.
(xi) A strong publication record in high-impact journals, along with experience in presenting at national and international conferences.
(xii) Proven ability to independently lead proteomics/metabolomics projects with strong documentation, communication, grant writing, and fund generation from extramural sources.

Expected Deliverables
To accelerate innovation for developing diagnostic, therapeutic, and preventive tools for AMR using proteomics/ metabolomics information and novel tools, including artificial intelligence.
Therapeutic innovation : Development of new preventive and curative strategies with a holistic approach, prioritizing phage therapy, and optimizing antibiotic usage in human and veterinary.
Diagnostic innovation : Novel biomarker development for bacterial infections, including AMR infections.
Prevention and Control : Understanding the dynamics and control of the emergence, transmission, and dissemination of resistance in bacterial pathogens and their environmental impact. Detection and reduction of antimicrobial residues in the environment in a One Health approach.

Consultant (Genomics- Scientific—Medical/Non-Medical)
Applications are invited for the post of Consultant (Scientific-Medical/Non-Medical): one post to spearhead high-impact research in Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) in bacterial pathogens. The candidate should have in-depth knowledge and direct research experience in microbial genomics, alongside microbiome exploration via metagenomics, with a particular focus on the ecology of pathogenicity and AMR. He/she should have proven expertise in high-throughput DNA sequencing, bioinformatics, big data management (analysis of large genomic datasets), and the use of machine learning towards the identification of AMR genes and tracking their spread. The chosen candidate would be required to lead the design and execution of advanced NGS-based workflows, apply machine learning to track and predict AMR, identify resistance patterns and mechanisms, and interpret the results for public health applications. In addition to the acumen above, candidates having knowledge in areas like infection control, public health surveillance, and antimicrobial stewardship would be preferred.

(vi) Experience working in multidisciplinary teams involving microbiology, chemical biology, Infectious biology, and drug development.
(vii) Proven ability to work seamlessly across domains—partnering with clinicians, microbiologists, and data scientists to drive impactful outcomes in collaborative, translational research settings.
(viii) A strong publication record in high-impact journals and experience in presenting at national and international conferences.
(ix) Proven ability to independently lead genomics projects with strong documentation, communication, grant writing, and fund generation from extramural sources.

General terms and conditions
1. Consolidated Remuneration :
The consolidated salary between Rs. 1,00,000 - Rs. 1,80,000 per month.
2. Age Limit
The minimum age for engagement as Consultants in ICMR HQ/Institute/Centre would be 40, and the maximum age would be 68 as of the last date of application.
3. Period of engagement:
The initial terms of engagement of consultants shall be for not more than one year and subsequent extension, if any, can be considered, on case to case basis, depending upon the job requirements and the frame for its completion subject to fulfillment of performance evaluation made by the competent Authority, but should not be more than five years, In all cases, the duration of engagement of any consultant, in ICMR (HQ/Institutes/Centres) should not be more than 05 years or till attaining the age of 70 years, whichever is earlier. Concerned Division/ Institute/ Center shall initiate necessary action well in advances, so that work many not suffer due to delay in recruitment process.

4. General conditions for engaging consultants :
Consultants would be engaged for fixed period, on a consolidated monthly remuneration, to provide high quality servicers, attending to specific job, within prescribed time frame. Such remuneration shall remain fixed during the entire period of contract.
As the engagement of consultants would be on full time contract basis, they would not be permitted to take up and other assignment, either part time or full time, during the period of such engagement.
The consultant's contract is temporary and can be terminated at any time without prior notice and without providing any reason. However, in normal course, termination of the contract may be done by giving not less than one month’s notice on either side at any time without assigning any reasons.
5. Procedure for engagement
The following procedure may be adopted for the engagement of a Consultant
a) The procedure to be followed for selecting a candidate for engagement as a Consultant, in any of the disciplines, shall be within the framework of provisions contained in the General Financial Rules, 2017, and as amended from time to time.
b) The list of eligible candidates will be placed on the websites/sent by email, and they are required to attend the written test/interview as per the schedule mentioned in the Call Letters. A suitable candidate may be selected on the basis of experience and performance in the interview.
6. Allowance.
The Consultants shall not be entitled to any other perquisites like honorarium or allowances such as Dearness Allowance, Residential Telephone, Transport Facility. Residential Accommodation, Personal Staff, CGHS and Medical Reimbursement, etc.
7. Attendance and working hour/day:
The working hours for the consultants will be same as regular employees of ICMR. No extra benefit will be allowed for working beyond office hours. Unauthorized absence for a continuous period of 08 days without valid reasons shall lead to automatic termination of the engagement.
8. Leave.
Paid leave of absence may be allowed at the rate of 1.5 days for each completed month of service. Therefore, a Consultant shall not draw any remuneration in case of his/her absence from work beyond authorized duration of leave. Unavailed leave during the period of engagement will not be carried forward in case of renewal. The leave record shall be maintained by the concerned Head of Division/Institute/Centre. Maternity leave shall be as per Maternity Benefit Act of Gol.
9. TA/DA.
No TA/DA shall be admissible for joining the assignment or on its completion.
The entitlements will be as follows:
Travelling Allowance: To and fro journey by Air (Economy Class)/ by train in AC-2 Tier/AC Chair Car
Daily Allowance: Rs.3000/-per day for other tour related expenses on Guest House / Hotel . Accommodation, food and local conveyance etc.

10. Release of Consolidated remuneration.
The monthly remuneration will be released to the Consultant based on an explicit certificate from the Head of Division / Institute / Centre on satisfactory performance and attendance.
11. Tax Deduction.
All Applicable taxes, as per government rules and regulations, will be deducted at source.
12. Legal Status.
The individual Consultant shall be engaged purely on contractual and temporary basis and will not be regarded, for any purpose, as being either an "employee" or "Official" of Council /Institute / Center. Further, he/she shall have no claim of further extension beyond contractual engagement or regularization of service in ICMR/or its any Institute / Center or Govt, of India in any case. An undertaking to this effect has to be signed by the Consultant, before joining.
13. Discipline and decorum.
The selected candidate shall follow all Institutional norms. Violation of the prescribed provisions will entail breach of the terms and conditions of the contract and would attract penal provisions, including termination of the contract.
14. Insurance.
The individual Consultant shall be solely responsible for taking out and for maintaining adequate insurance, required to meet any of his/her obligations under the contract, as well as for arranging, at his/her own expense, such as life, health and other forms of insurance, as the individual Consultant may consider appropriate, to cover the period during which they are engaged.
15. Settlement of Disputes.
Council / ICMR Institutes / Center and the individual Consultant shall use their best efforts to amicably settle disputes, controversies or claims arising out of the contractual duration.
16. Conflict of Interest.
The individual Consultant shall be expected to follow all the Guidelines of the Council / Gol, which are in force from time to time. He/she will be expected to display utmost honesty, secrecy of office, and sincerity while discharging his/her duties. In case the service of any Consultant is not found satisfactory or found in conflict of interest of the Council / Gol, his/her engagement will be liable for discontinuation immediately, without assigning any reason thereof. An undertaking to this effect shall be signed by the Consultant, before joining.
17. Audits and Investigation.
Each invoice / bill paid by the Council/Institute/Center shall be subject to post-audit by auditors (Internal/External) from time to time. The individual Consultant acknowledges and agrees that, he/she shall provide full and timely cooperation with such investigations/post payment audits, which the Council / Gol may conduct, on any aspect of the consultancy contract or award thereof.

18. Travel, Medical Clearance and Service Incurred Death, Injury or Illness.
Council/Institute/Center may require the Consultant to submit a Statement of Good Health from a recognized physician, prior to commencement of work, in any offices or premises of Indian Council of Medical Research. In the event of the death, injury or illness of the Consultant, which is attributable to the performance of services on behalf of Council / Institute / Center, under the terms of the Contract, while the Consultant is traveling on tour of Council/Institute / Center expense or is performing any services under the Contract in any offices or premises of Council / Institute / Center, the Consultant or his/her dependents, as appropriate, shall not be entitled to any compensation.
19. Force Majeure and other Conditions.
Force majeure, as used herein, means any unforeseeable and irresistible act of nature, any act of war (whether declared or not), invasion, revolution, insurrection, or any other acts of a similar nature or force, provided that such acts arise from causes beyond the control and without the fault or negligence of the Consultant. The Consultant acknowledges and agrees that, with respect to any obligations under the Contract that the Consultant must perform in or for any areas in which they are engaged in, preparing to engage in, or disengaging from any peacekeeping, humanitarian or similar operations, any delay or failure to perform such obligations arising from or relating to harsh conditions within such areas or to any incidents of civil unrest occurring in such areas shall not, in and of itself constitute force majeure under the Contract.
20. Interpretation.
Where any doubt arises as to the interpretation of any of the provisions of these rules, the matter shall be referred to DG-ICMR, whose decision shall be final and binding.
21. Power to Relax.
Where the DG-ICMR is of the opinion that it is necessary or expedient to do so, he may, by order, for reasons to be recorded in writing, relax any of the provisions of these guidelines.
