Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR), an Autonomous Institute under the aegis of the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE), Government of India and is also a Deemed University, mainly awarding degrees for doctoral programs. The National Centre for Biological Sciences (NCBS) is a Centre of the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research is looking for an appointment for the following position on a permanent basis Applications are invited from the eligible Indian Nationals to fill-up the following position.

Post : Scientific Officer ‘B’ (Lab Support)

Pay Level and Pay Stage as per 7th CPC Pay Matrix : Pay Level 8, Pay Stage 1
TME (Rs.) : 92,860/-

Qualification & Experience :
(a) Full Time Masters degree in Life Science (from a recognized University / Institute with aggregate of 60% marks).
(b) ) 2 years’ experience in any academic / Private laboratory or similar setting closely related to the position.

Desirable Experience
Candidates with good communications skills are preferred.
Knowledge of use of personal computers and applications.


Age : Maximum 31 years as of 01.01.2024 (including relaxation).

Selection Method : Written Test and Skill Test.


Brief Job Description
• Formulation of policy for various activities in the laboratory in consultation with other members of the group
• Manage departmental budget for supplies, service contracts, and maintenance in collaboration with the department chair
• Identifying hazardous conditions or operations in the laboratory, determining safe procedure and controls and implementing and enforcing standard safety procedures
• Responsible for all ordering in the department, organization of invoices and receipts, and contact with vendors
• Supervising of routine jobs carried out by the laboratory assistants daily to ensure that quality is maintained.
• Manages financial activities and/or reports pertaining to the laboratory; assists in the preparation of budget estimates.
• Maintains laboratory supplies inventory by checking stock to determine inventory level, anticipating needed supplies, placing and expediting orders for supplies, verifying receipt of supplies.
• Initiate rate contract with vendors for commonly used laboratory consumables.
• Coordinating space utilization in consultation with the space committee.
• Provide support for faculty and students in the department for their research projects.
• Conducting periodic self-inspection of laboratory and maintaining records of inspections, as required.
• Ordering of laboratory grade gases and maintaining inventory.
• Performs other related duties as assigned.
