Post : Basic Biomedical Research Fellowships

Early Career Fellowships
Purpose
This is a mentored Fellowship for promising newly qualified postdoctoral researchers to attain independence. The scheme provides a unique opportunity to help them make an early start in establishing their own research programme.
Provisions
ECF is a full-time Fellowship for five years and provides:
• The Fellow's personal support
• Research expenses, including research assistance if required
• Additional allowances (travel and overseas subsistence) for Work outside Host Institution (scientifically justified long-term training or collaborative laboratory visits anywhere in the world for up to 24 months, except in the first year and majority of the final year of the Fellowship)
• Other India Alliance contributions
Points to note:
• The total award for an Early Career Fellowship typically includes the costs requested by the applicant as well as the set contributions by the India Alliance. For further details, see costing policies. Costs requested by the applicant must be commensurate with their research proposal and should be fully justified in the full application. Inadequate justifications may result in costs being revised.
• Applicants have the option of requesting one technical support staff. The request has to be supported by strong scientific justification and a letter from the proposed Fellowship Supervisor to substantiate this request. Please note that the request for support staff should not be made for the first year of the Fellowship. Salary for the support staff will have to be quoted as per the norms of the Host Institution. The cost of recruiting and supporting the support staff has to be factored within the overall budgetary limit set for Early Career Fellowship; no supplementary funds will be provided for this purpose.
• Fund requests for expensive items of equipment are typically not allowed. It is expected that applicants will choose appropriate laboratories/ environments where majority of the necessary equipment and facilities are already available.
• Early Career Fellows not holding a faculty position are expected to spend all their research time on the India Alliance-funded project and are not allowed to commit time to other grants.
• Early Career Fellows who hold a faculty position at the Host Institution are allowed to spend up to 10% of their research time on other grants as co-Principal Investigator.
• Time permitted for non-research related activity during the Fellowship is normally restricted to a maximum of two hours per week.

Intermediate Fellowships
Purpose
This scheme supports excellent scientists who wish to undertake high-quality research and to establish themselves as independent researchers in an academic institution in India.
Provisions
The fellowship has tenure of five years and provides:
• The Fellow's Personal Support
• Research expenses, including research assistance if required (normally funding for two research staff may be requested; requests for additional research staff may be considered where field work or clinical studies are proposed).
• Additional allowances for scientifically justified visits of up to one year to an external laboratory either in India or abroad.
• The total award for an Intermediate Fellowship typically includes the costs requested by the applicant as well as the set contributions by the India Alliance. For further details, see costing policies. Costs requested by the applicant must commensurate with their research proposal and should be fully justified in the full application. Inadequate justifications may result in costs being revised.
• Time permitted for non-research related activity during the fellowship is normally restricted to a maximum of eight hours each week.

Senior Fellowships
Purpose
This scheme supports outstanding researchers of any nationality, either medically qualified or science graduates, who wish to pursue a research career in an academic institution in India. Applicants must have demonstrated their ability to lead an independent research project and group.
Provisions
The fellowship has tenure of five years and provides:
• The Fellow's personal support
• Research expenses, including research assistance if required (normally funding for four research staff may be requested).
• The total award for a Senior Fellowship typically includes the costs requested by the applicant as well as the set contributions by the India Alliance. For further details, see costing policies. Costs requested by the applicant must be commensurate with their research proposal and should be fully justified in the full application. Inadequate justifications may result in costs being revised.
• Time permitted for non-research related activity during the fellowship is normally restricted to a maximum of eight hours each week.

Eligibility Criteria
Candidates should normally have a PhD and/or equivalent clinical or public health research experience. In case of Clinical or Public Health Researchers only, a post-graduate degree in Medical or Allied Health Sciences e.g MD/MPH etc is sufficient.
There are no age or nationality restrictions.  However, the Research Training Fellowship competition is open only to Indian nationals.
Candidates need not be resident in India during the application process. They need not have undertaken their PhD (or other qualifying degree) in India.
Holders of established posts in a host institution can also apply to our fellowships. India Alliance would provide salary support for the entire 5 year tenure of the fellowship based on the Fellow’s status at the host institution. The candidate however would not be expected to receive any further salary support in addition to India Alliance funding.
The Fellowship must be started within one year of being awarded. It is mandatory for the awarded Fellows to be hosted in the Host Institution for the entire duration of the Fellowship (5 years for Early Career Fellowship). Exceptions will not be considered.
The first year and majority of the final year of the Fellowship must be spent in host institution in India. The host Institute in India is responsible for administering the Fellowship. Hence the fellowship must be activated while in India before the 'Work outside host Institution' option can be availed.

Dual Fellowship Policy: You may apply even if you already hold another Fellowship. However, please note that if awarded, you will be required to make a choice between your current Fellowship and the India Alliance Fellowship.
Eligibility to our Fellowships is calculated from the date of PhD viva (or date of highest post-graduate medical or Public health degree) to the full application deadline for a particular round of competition. Due consideration is given to periods when applicants are not involved in any type of research activity. Please see the individual fellowship schemes for other fellowship specific eligibility requirements.
