Seminar on Formulation Development of Liquid Oral Dosage Forms 6th June, 2014 at NIPER

Clinical courses

NIPER had successfully conducted 53 training programs under the World Bank sponsored “Capacity Building Project” in the years 2004 to 2008. These were meant for the technical staff from government testing laboratories, regulatory bodies, private testing laboratories and analytical as well as production staff from Small and Medium Pharmaceutical Industries (SMPIs). Department of Pharmaceuticals, Government of India, announced the setting up of a dedicated centre for SMPIs at Pharmaceutical Advisory Forum (PAF) on 23rd April 2008. This Centre offers practical trainings on analytical instruments and conducts seminars on issues of relevance to the Pharma industry like GLP, GMP & regulatory affairs. All these activities have been designed in consultation with SMPIs. This dedicated centre aims at creating synergy between industry and academia.

TOPIC OF SEMINAR
'FORMULATION DEVELOPMENT OF LIQUID ORAL DOSAGE FORMS'
Liquid preparations for oral use include solutions, syrups, suspensions, emulsions and concentrates containing one or more active ingredients. Liquid dosage forms are most commonly found in medicines for geriatric and paediatric patients. They offer biopharmaceutical advantage, including faster onset of action due to the absence of dissolution step in solution formulations and more rapid oral absorption. However, specific issues are involved in their formulation development and manufacturing. Solution formulations are more susceptible to chemical degradation than the solid form. Major challenges in developing oral liquid dosage forms include stability of the drug in solution, the solubility of a drug at the required level and an acceptable taste. In the manufacture of oral liquid preparations, measures have to be taken to ensure that all ingredients are of appropriate quality, have minimum risk of microbial contamination and cross- contamination. Similarly suspension formulations offer challenges in physical stability. This seminar shall focus on the complete quality cycle of liquid oral products. The seminar is intended for the personnel from the industry and researchers within the academic community.

The following are some of the topics that shall be deliberated in the seminar:
i) Systematic formulation development of Syrups/ Solutions
ii) Systematic formulation development of Suspensions
iii) Microbial quality of liquid orals
iv) Taste masking
v) Issues related to packaging of liquid orals

SPEAKERS
Eminent personalities from academia and highly experienced personnel from pharmaceutical industry shall deliver the lectures. A panel discussion on queries from participants shall also be held.

REGISTRATION FEE
Rs 3000 /- per delegate, Rs 2000/- for SMPIC members and Rs 800/- for students.
