With a coastline of about 3,500 miles, inland sources in Rajasthan and Little Rann of Kutch, and the rock salt mines in Mandi, India have possibilities of attaining a high position in salt production among the salt producing countries of the world. As is known, apart from being an indispensable item of food, salt is an important raw material for the manufacture of several heavy chemicals e.g. soda ash, caustic soda and chlorine. Besides, salt is used in food processing industries, such as fish curing, meat packing, dairy products and fruit and vegetable canning.

Regional Centre for Biotechnology (RCB) is an institution of education, training and research established by the Govt. of India under the auspices of UNESCO to foster innovative research and education in a wide range of biotech-related sciences. Center of Innovative and Applied Bioprocessing (CIAB) is an autonomous national institute under Department of Biotechnology (Govt. of India). This futuristic innovation institute of its own kind in the country has a mission of advancing knowledge, leads and emerging technologies/processes relevant to agri-food sector towards applications and products. It aims to link them with societal benefits through catalysing/promoting entrepreneurial action around bioprocesses, bio-products, value-addition to bioproducts etc. with special reference to the agri-food sector.

The Institute of Nano Science and Technology, Mohali (INST-Mohali) has been established by the Government of India as a specialized centre of excellence to promote the growth of R&D in, and exploit the application-potential of, Nano Science and Technology in the country. It is envisaged that INST-Mohali will initially focus on R&D in the areas of nanomaterials, nanometrology, nano-bio pharma, nano-medicine and on nano R&D relevant for food and agriculture. It is also expected to focus on basic research, human resource development and transfer of intellectual knowledge in the area of nanotechnology to industry to exploit its application potential. Institute of Advanced Study in Science and Technology (IASST) is a premier scientific research organization in the north-east region, conceived and nurtured by the Assam Science Society in its initial years and was inaugurated by Nobel Laureate Dorothy C. Hodgkin on 3rd November 1979. Subsequently, it was supported by the state govt. as its only autonomous R&D institute till March 2009. The institute was taken over in March, 2009 by the Ministry of Science and Technology, Govt of India as one of its autonomous R&D institute.
