The state's commitment to tackle HIV and AIDS dates to 1992 when KSAPS was established as a cell in the Directorate of Health and Family Welfare Services and registered as a society in 1997. It has implemented HIV prevention, care and support programs within the framework of NACP-I, II and III with support from NACO. KSAPS built strong partnerships with the government health infrastructure, NGOs and collaborative projects such as the Indo-Canadian Collaborative HIV/AIDS Project (ICHAP), which operated from 2000-2005.

The Union Cabinet vide its decision dated 1st May 2013 has approved the launch of National Urban Health Mission (NUHM) as a Sub-mission of an over-arching National Health Mission (NHM), with National Rural Health Mission (NRHM) being the other Sub-mission of National Health Mission. Within the broad national parameters and priorities, states would have the flexibility to plan and implement state-specific action plans. The state PIP would spell out the key strategies, activities undertaken, budgetary requirements and key health outputs and outcomes.

National Institute of Nutrition (NIN) was founded by Sir Robert McCarrison in the year 1918 as ‘Beri-Beri’ Enquiry Unit in a single room laboratory at the Pasteur Institute, Coonoor, Tamil Nadu. Within a short span of seven years, this unit blossomed into a "Deficiency Disease Enquiry" and later in 1928, emerged as full-fledged "Nutrition Research Laboratories" (NRL) with Dr. McCarrison as its first Director. It was shifted to Hyderabad in 1958.
