Dementia is defined as a loss of intellectual abilities that is severe enough to interfere with social or occupational functioning.
Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is most common cause of dementia. 50-70% of all cases of dementia are due to Alzheimer’s disease.
AD is characterized by early memory deficits, followed by gradual erosion of other cognitive functions. The most severe neuropathological changes occur in the hippocampus, followed by association cortices or subcortical structures, including the amygdale and nucleus basalis of Meyhert.

The Constituent Assembly, after independence, saw the need for giving a secure and autonomous status to Public Service Commissions both at Federal and Provincial levels for ensuring unbiased recruitment to Civil Services as also for protection of service interests. With the promulgation of the new Constitution for independent India on 26th January, 1950, the Federal Public Service Commission was accorded a constitutional status as an autonomous entity and given the title – Union Public Service Commission.

NIPER-Guwahati is the fifth institute to be included in the list of the premium institutes under the Department of Pharmaceuticals, Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilizers, Government of India. NIPER-Guwahati started functioning from the month of September, 2008.

The All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) was established by an Act of Parliament (No. 52 of 1987) with a view to provide proper planning and coordinated development of the technical education system throughout the country, the promotion of qualitative improvements of such education in relation to planned quantitative growth and the regulation and proper maintenance of norms and standards in the technical education system and for matters connected therewith.

The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), New Delhi, the apex body in India for the formulation, coordination and promotion of biomedical research, is one of the oldest medical research bodies in the world.

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) is an autonomous statutory Authority set up under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006 for laying down science based standards for articles of food and to regulate their manufacture, storage, distribution, sale and import to ensure availability of safe and wholesome food for human consumption.

Government of India has set up six new National Institutes of Pharmaceutical Education and Research (NIPERs) under the aegis of Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilizers, Department of Pharmaceuticals, at Rae Bareli, Hajipur, Guwahati, Kolkata, Ahmedabad and Hyderabad. These are presently being run with the help of Mentor Institutes. The Institutes are required to be established on their own.
