The National Institute of Virology is one of the major Institutes of the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR). It was established at Pune, Maharashtra State in 1952 as Virus Research Centre (VRC) under the auspices of the ICMR and the Rockefeller Foundation (RF), USA. It was an outcome of the global programme of the RF for investigating the Arthropod Borne viruses. Since the studies on arboviruses and their arthropod vectors involve most of the basic principles and techniques of general virology, entomology and zoology, these viruses were also considered to be an ideal group, to begin with, for intensive training and research in virology in our country. The RF withdrew its support in 1967 and since then the Institute is entirely funded by the ICMR.

Jamia Hamdard was conceived as a seat of higher learning in Unani Medicine, Islamic Studies, Biosciences, Pharmacy, Nursing and other areas of knowledge by its founder as a means of fulfilling the objects of the wakf.  Over a period of last ten years, Jamia Hamdard has emerged as an outstanding institution of higher learning with distinct and focused academic programmes. National Institute of Biologicals (NIB) had been set up in 1992 as an apex autonomous Institute under the administrative control of the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, Government of India for promoting and protecting human health through various activities assigned to it. The mandate of the Institute includes ensuring provision of quality biological drugs i.e Invitro diagnostics, Vaccines and Biotherapeutics, including therapeutic monoclonal antibodies used by patients suffering from cancer and autoimmune diseases by undertaking high end science based testing with R&D interface for application of science.
