  • The National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities (NIMHD), part of the National Institutes of Health, has funded three new awards and renewed the awards of eight institutions previously funded under the Research Centers in Minority Institutions (RCMI) Specialized Centers program. The RCMI develops and strengthens the research infrastructure necessary to conduct state-of-the-art biomedical research and foster the next generation of researchers from underrepresented populations. The centers will share approximately $187 million over their five-year project periods, subject to available funds.

  • An innovative graphene-based film helps shield people from disease-carrying mosquitos, according to a new study funded by the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS), part of the National Institutes of Health. The research, conducted by the Brown University Superfund Research Center, Providence, Rhode Island, is published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

  • PCI decided to start clinical pharmacy era and amend pharmacy practice regulations

    Pharmacy council of India (PCI) proposed health ministry and stakeholders to include the post of Clinical Pharmacist with qualification, duties and responsibilities in hospital at 107th Central Council meeting held in August 2019. PCI decided to initiate action for amendment of the Pharmacy Practice Regulations, 2015 by incorporating the details of Position Title and job responsibilities in respect of Clinical Pharmacists.

     

  • The All of Us Research Program(link is external), part of the National Institutes of Health, has awarded $4.6 million in initial funding to Color(link is external), a health technology company in Burlingame, California, to establish the program’s nationwide genetic counseling resource. With the goal of speeding up health research breakthroughs, All of Us plans to sequence the genomes of 1 million participants from diverse communities across the United States. Through this funding, Color’s network of genetic counselors will help participants understand what the genomic testing results mean for their health and their families.

  • Researchers believe that stuttering — a potentially lifelong and debilitating speech disorder — stems from problems with the circuits in the brain that control speech, but precisely how and where these problems occur is unknown. Using a mouse model of stuttering, scientists report that a loss of cells in the brain called astrocytes are associated with stuttering. The mice had been engineered with a human gene mutation previously linked to stuttering. The study(link is external), which appeared online in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, offers insights into the neurological deficits associated with stuttering.

  • A remedy may finally be in the offing for neuropathic pain, which is a form of chronic pain that arises due to neuronal injury because of accidents, amputation, surgeries, cancer, diabetes and other such ailments. Researchers at Bengaluru-based Indian Institute of Science have found that lysozyme, an antibacterial protein that is found in body secretions like tears and saliva could be a leading cause for this type of pain.
