Department of Pharmacy is offering a three-year PhD fellowship in Advanced Drug Delivery Systems for Brain Cancer Treatment. The PhD fellowship is financed by the Danish Council for Independent Research | Technology and Production Sciences (Det Frie Forskningsråd for Teknologi og Produktion (FTP)), reference DFF - 7017-00065, and involves collaboration with Prof. Seyed Moein Moghimi (School of Medicine, Pharmacy and Health, University of Durham, UK) and different international collaborators. The fellowship is available from 01.09.2017 or as soon as possible thereafter.
Project description
The main problems in treating brain tumors are the limited permeability of the blood brain barrier (BBB) to anti-cancer therapeutics and the high sensitivity of healthy surrounding tissues. Recent studies showed that nanoparticlulate formulations are attractive candidates for glioblastoma therapy as they can migrate the compromised regions of the BBB (tumor enhanced permeability retention effect) and release their drug cargo at the vicinity of the brain tumors. Through precision nano-engineering and an interdisciplinary integrated approach, this project focuses on the formulation of immune-safe non-lamellar liquid crystalline nanocarriers for bioimaging of - and concomitant drug delivery to - cancerous brain tumors, by dual encapsulation of an imaging probe and an anticancer drug in the internal nanostructures of cubosomes and hexosomes. Cubosomes and hexosomes are intriguing nanoparticles with unique self assemblies providing reservoirs for accommodating imaging probes as well as poorly water-soluble anticancer drugs.
Required qualifications
- Obtained a Master´s degree in nanomedicine, or a closely related subject prior to the starting date.
- Fluency in English and excellent communication skills
- The ability to work in an interdisciplinary environment.
- The ability to travel for performing experiments abroad.
Preferred qualifications
We are looking for a highly motivated individual with a strong background in connection with cancer research, and previous experience in tissue culture, cell biology, in vivo testing. and molecular imaging are advantageous.

Formal requirements
The successful applicant will be requested to formally apply for enrolment as a PhD student at the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences according to the rules stipulated in the Ministerial order on the PhD programme at the universities (PhD order) from the Ministry of Science, Innovation, and Higher Education and the guidelines for the PhD programme at the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences.
Terms of employment
The position as a PhD fellow is available for a 3-year period. Salary and other terms and conditions of appointment are set in accordance with the Agreement between the Ministry of Finance and AC (Danish Confederation of Professional Associations) or other relevant professional organizations. The position is covered by the Protocol on Job Structure. Minimum monthly salary is DKK 26,073 (taxable) + pension contribution.
