Defence Research Laboratory (DRL) has focused its research and development studies on vector-borne diseases, improving the quality of drinking water, waste biodegradation and management, high altitude horticulture and protective cultivation for hilly and border areas, and development of various products for use by defence forces.

CSIR - North East Institute of Science & Technology, Jorhat, a constituent establishment of CSIR, is a multidisciplinary institute having research areas like Chemical Sciences, Biological Sciences, Materials Sciences, Engineering Sciences, Geological Sciences, Advanced Computation and Data Sciences etc. The institute is equipped with sophisticated state-of-art analytical and other equipment to carry out research activities in frontier areas of science & technology.

The Institute was initially started with a Unit of Survey of Medicinal Plants and Clinical Research in the year 1971 and it was upgraded to Regional Research Institute in 1979. Further it was renamed as North Eastern India Ayurveda Research Institute in the year 2009 and subsequently it was again renamed as Regional Ayurveda Research Institute for Gastro-Intestinal Disorder. The Institute has its own Land and Building. The Institute was renamed as Central Ayurveda Research Institute with reference to the Letter vide.
