University of Pune, one of the premier universities in India, is positioned in the North-western part of Pune city. It occupies an area of about 411 acres. It was established on 10th February, 1948 under the Poona University Act. The university houses 46 academic departments. It is popularly known as the 'Oxford of the East'. It has about 118 recognized research institutes and 269 affiliated colleges offering graduate and under-graduate courses.

The Centre for DNA Fingerprinting and Diagnostics (CDFD) is an autonomous organization funded by the Department of Biotechnology (DBT), Ministry of Science and Technology, Government of India. CDFD receives funding also from other agencies on specific collaborative projects.

NIPER, Hyderabad is an autonomous body which has been establised under the aegis of Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilizers, in the Government of India, to provide leadership in Pharmaceuticals Sciences and other related areas. It admists students for M.S.(Pharm), M.Pharm, M.Tech (Pharm) and PhD programmes in various disciplines of Pharmaceuticals Sciences every year.

The founding fathers including doyens of the University envisioned strong base in basic and applied sciences as the bedrock on which foundation of teaching and research in agriculture and related sciences and technology had to be laid. Social Sciences and Humanities were to be attuned to scientific endeavor in consonance with the ground realities of rural society through congruency assessment and feedback.

Pondicherry University is outstanding among the Central Universities in India. Teaching and research are its primary functions as in other Central Universities. In addition, it has also affiliated colleges located in Puducherry, Karaikal, Mahe, Yanam and the Union Territory of Andaman & Nicobar Islands. The Union Territory of Lakshadweep is also expected to have a college affiliated to Pondicherry University in the near future.
