National Institute of Pharmaceutical Education & Research (NIPER), Hyderabad is an “Institute of National Importance" with proclaimed objectives of becoming Centre of Excellence for advanced research in Pharmaceutical Sciences. NIPER, Hyderabad started functioning from 19th October, 2007 from the premises of erstwhile R&D Centre of IDPL, Baianagar, Hyderabad. CSIR-Indian Institute of Chemical Technology (CSIR-IICT), Hyderabad, a premier Research Institute, is the Mentor Institute for NIPER, Hyderabad. It has grown very fast and is currently ranked among top Pharmacy Institutions. The Institute offers degrees such as M.S. (Pharm.), M.B.A (Pharm.). M.Tech. (Pharm.) courses and the Ph.D. The areas currently covered include Medicinal Chemistry, Pharmacology & Toxicology, Pharmaceutics, Regulatory Toxicology, Process Chemistry, Pharmaceutical Analysis, and Pharmaceutical Management. The NIPER, Hyderabad has excellent Laboratory research facilities which are complemented by CSIR-IICT (Mentor- Institute) to update the knowledge of the students and expose them to various advanced techniques essential for research on drug discovery. The Union Cabinet vide its decision dated 1st May 2013 has approved the launch of National Urban Health Mission (NUHM) as a Sub-mission of an over-arching National Health Mission (NHM), with National Rural Health Mission (NRHM) being the other Sub-mission of National Health Mission. Within the broad national parameters and priorities, states would have the flexibility to plan and implement state specific action plans.

The Department of Pharmaceuticals was created on the 1st of July in the year 2008 in the Ministry of Chemicals & Fertilizers so as to provide greater focus for the growth of the high potential Pharmaceuticals industry.  Shri Ananth Kumar is the Minister of Chemical and Fertilizers and Shri Mansukh L. Mandaviya is the Minister of State for Chemicals and Fertilizers.
