The history of the IIT system dates back to 1946 when a committee was set up by Hon'ble Sir Jogendra Singh, Member of the Viceroy's Executive Council, Department of Education, Health and Agriculture to consider the setting up of Higher Technical Institutions for post war industrial development in India. The 22 member committee headed by Sri N.R.Sarkar, in its report, recommended the establishment of four Higher Technical Institutions in the Eastern, Western, Northern and Southern regions, possibly on the lines of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, USA, with a number of secondary institutions affiliated to it. The report also urged the speedy establishment of all the four institutions with the ones in the East and the West to be started immediately.

The Department of Pharmaceuticals was created on the 1st of July in the year 2008 in the Ministry of Chemicals & Fertilizers so as to provide greater focus for the growth of the high potential Pharmaceuticals industry.  Shri Ananth Kumar is the Minister of Chemical and Fertilizers and Shri Mansukh L. Mandaviya is the Minister of State for Chemicals and Fertilizers.

Uttarakhand State Council for Science and Technology is an autonomous body of the Government of Uttarakhand, Department of Science & Technology. UCOST started its activities from last quarter of year 2005, However it was registered under the Registration of Societies Act, 1860 in November 2002.

Recipharm have recently acquired two subsidiaries in India; Recipharm Bengaluru in South India, and Nitin in North India. Recipharm in Bengaluru employs more than 1200 people and is a multipurpose facility with three large stand-alone manufacturing units and one pharmaceutical development unit. Nitin employs about 500 people and has three manufacturing units for sterile pharmaceuticals in Karnal and in Paonta Sahib. All Recipharm units offer contract manufacturing and developing of pharmaceuticals to demanding customers worldwide.

Govt. of Himachal Pradesh took up initiative in early seventies to set up a CSIR lab to make prudential use of the natural resources of the region. After several levels of discussions a formal request was made by then Chief Minister of HP to Vice President, CSIR in 1982 for initiating the matter, and giving final shape to the proposal. The dream of HP government finally came true in 1983 when the foundation stone of this National lab was laid as CSIR Complex Palampur by Prof. Nurul Hasan, former Vice President of CSIR, with then Chief Minister of HP chairing the function.
