Originally established by the Government of Kerala as an advanced centre for medical specialties, Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute for Medical Sciences and Technology SCTIMST metamorphosed into an Institution of National Importance with the status of a University in 1980 under the Department of Science and Technology, Govt. of India by an Act of Parliament. The joint culture of medicine and technology that the Institute pioneered more than three decades ago has come of age and gained unprecedented acceptance in India.

Periyar University imparts higher education through three modes: Departments of Study and Research, the affiliated Colleges, and Periyar Institute of Distance Education (PRIDE). The University has 27 departments and 113 affiliated colleges. The University is named after the Great Social Reformer E.V. Ramasamy, affectionately called as Thanthai Periyar. Central Sericultural Research & Training Institute (CSRTI), Mysore, the pioneer research institution in the field of tropical sericulture, was established at Chennapattna in 1961 under the administrative control of Central Silk Board, Ministry of Textiles, Government of India for the over all development of silk industry in the country. During the course of development the Institute was shifted to Mysore the princely city in the year 1963.
