Karnataka drugs control department has issued 291 show cause notices to the sales units. The department has also warned four manufacturing units and one blood bank for violating the Drugs & Cosmetics Act. The inspections were carried out from December 1 to 31, 2009.

The enforcement officers had carried out 1744 inspections on sales premises and 23 inspections on manufacturing units.

In addition, 107 sales licenses have been suspended and 73 sales licenses were cancelled. However the department has also granted 292 fresh licenses. During the month three prosecution cases were filed in the court. Ten cases were disposed, out of which five were convicted. There were 14 complaints received from the public which were investigated.



In the drug test lab, a total of 261 samples were analyzed of which 13 were declared not of standard quality and investigations are being carried out. These include Dolomax which is paracetamol tablet manufactured by T&G Medicare in Baddi in Solar district in Himachal Pradesh.

The drug test lab at Bellary has also provided a list of not of standard quality drugs. These are SB Mox which is a dispersible amoxicillin manufactured by Pharma French Pharmaceutical India at Solan district, Oxalic Oz which is a ofloxacin suspension manufactured by Acacia Biotech, Menulid tablets manufactured by Anrose Pharma in Solan district, Terbolin syrup manufactured by Asian Labs in Andhra Pradesh, Contrazen which is a trimethoprim and sulphamethoxazole tablet produced by Zenmark Pharmaceutical Industries in Ujjain and albendazole tablets by Karnataka Antibiotics Pharmaceuticals Limited.

Other drugs are cetirizine hydrochloride by Preet Remedies in Himachal Pradesh, vitamin C and zinc chewable tablets from Adietika Pharma and calcium citrate with vitamin D3 by Surakaha Pharma, Utista tablets from Tidal Labs in Himachal Pradesh, diclopan forte tablets from Maxtar Biogenics and norfloxacin by Shiv Chem.

Karnataka has a total of 23,400 sales, 171 blood banks, 35 blood storage centres, 236 manufacturing unit and 93 cosmetic companies.
