The Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO) has taken step to introduce an effective “trace and track” mechanism on  top 300 brands, which would be included in the initiative. The top 300 brands were identified on the basis of moving annual total (MAT) data.

They will hold a meeting with manufacturers’ representatives on June 25 to discuss modalities for implementing the initiative.

Under this proposal, the company will print a 14-digit unique number on each strip or bottle of the drug. It will also print a phone number where the customer can dial and enter the aforesaid unique number. A consumer can get the name and address of the manufacturer, the batch number, manufacturing and expiry date of the medicine. A consumer can easily check the genuineness and quality of a drug. However, the initiative will be implemented on a voluntary basis, according to the minutes of the DTAB meeting.

The Drugs Technical Advisory Board (DTAB), in its meeting on May 16, deliberated this matter and agreed for introduction of trace and track mechanism for top 300 pharmaceuticals brands on voluntary basis

To prepare list, the CDSCO has banked on data obtained from AIOCD AWACS. The AIOCD AWACS is a pharmaceutical market research company formed by All Indian Origin Chemists & Distributors Ltd.
