They do not find any direct references of Sangli before 1801. The first clear and direct refernce to sangli can be found in the sankrit poem Shiv-Bharat. During the time of Shivaji Maharaj, his courageous Sarnoubat  Netaji Palkar captured Sangli, Miraj and Brahmnal from the Adilshah in 1659.

The Solapur District was ruled by various dynesties such as Andhrabhratyas, Chalukyas, Rashtrkutas, Yadavas and Bahamanis. 'SOLAPUR' is believed to be derived from two words 'SOLA'meaning sixteen and 'PUR' meaning village. Thepresent city of Solapur was considered tp be spread over sixteen villages viz. Aadilpur, Ahmedpur, Chapaldev, Fatehpur, Jamdarwadi, Kalajapur, Khandervkiwadi, Muhammadpur, Ranapur, Sandalpur, Shaikpur, Solapur, Sonalagi, Sonapur and Vaidakwadi.
