Triclosan (Kopsan by Kumar Organics) is an antibacterial and antifungal agent present in many consumer products. It is a chlorinated aromatic compound which has functional groups representative of both ethers and phenols. Phenols often show antibacterial properties.
It has been used in soaps, shampoos, deodorants, toothpastes, mouthwashes, cleaning supplies, and pesticides for many years. It is part of consumer products, including kitchen utensils, toys, bedding, socks, and trash bags. It is added to a variety of products where it acts to slow or stop the growth of bacteria, fungi, and mildew. In commercial, institutional, and industrial equipment uses, triclosan is incorporated in conveyor belts, fire hoses, dye bath vats, or ice-making.

Triclosan is also used in the coatings for some surgical sutures. There is good evidence that these triclosan coated sutures reduce the risk of surgical site infection. The World Health Organization, the American College of Surgeons and the Surgical Infection Society point out the benefit of triclosan-coated sutures in reducing the risk for surgical site infection. Triclosan has been employed as a selective agent in molecular cloning. A bacterial host transformed by a plasmid harbouring a triclosan-resistant mutant FabI gene (mFabI) as a selectable marker can grow in presence of high dose of triclosan in growth media.

Triclosan was developed in the 1960s and was used as a hospital scrub in the 1970s. A 2006 study recommended showering with 2% triclosan as a regimen in surgical units to rid patient's skin of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus. A Cochrane review of 30 studies concluded that triclosan/copolymer-containing toothpastes produced a 22% reduction in both dental plaque and gingival inflammation when compared with fluoride toothpastes without triclosan/copolymer.

There is good news that Triclosan proves to be Virucidal against SARS virus as an exciting discovery to encounter Covid-19. KOP Research Centre Pvt. Ltd. took initiative to get Triclosan tested for its Virucidal activity. It shows a log reduction of 5.67 logs at a concentration of 100µM as tested after 10 minutes against HCoV-229E virus.

Human being in Whole world is currently experiencing the Covid viral pandemic. Depending on the type of surface and ambient conditions, viruses can persist for as short as 5 min to greater than 28 days on inanimate surfaces. The use of sanitizing agents for personal care and surface disinfection is clearly of paramount importance in limiting viral transmissions, by inactivating the viruses before they have a chance to enter the human body. Virucidal agents are chemical substances that attack and inactivate viral particles outside the cell which is accomplished by damaging their protein shells or the substance penetrates the core itself, where it destroys the genetic material.

A study conducted as per ASTEM E1053 proves that 100µM Triclosan eliminates the SARS Virus HCoV -229E as good as 99.99% in 5 minutes and 99.999% in 10 minutes.

In the context of the present viral epidemic, Triclosan can be explored against Covid virus as virucidal agent apart from its antibacterial applications. It can find usage in mask, wipes, antimicrobial coatings, paints, pipes, door handles, bed foams, cleanser, Hygiene products, sanitizer & medical devices etc.
