The PGIMER owes its inception to the vision of late Sardar Partap Singh Kairon, the then Chief Minister of Punjab and the distinguished medical educationists of the then combined state of Punjab, supported by the first Prime Minister of India Pt. Jawahar Lal Nehru who considered the institutions of scientific knowledge as temples of learning and the places of pilgrimage. The institute started in 1962 and Pt Jawahar Lal Nehru inaugurated the hospital now named “Nehru Hospital” on 7th July 1963. The Institute was originally under the Government of undivided Punjab. After the reorganization of the state, the administrative control of the institute passed on to the Union Territory of Chandigarh in November 1966. The Institute became an autonomous body under the Act of Parliament in 1967 functioning under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India, with the following mandate.

Project Research Scientist-I (Non- Medical) - (02 posts)
Salary : Rs. 56,000/- pm + 20% HRA
Essential Qualification : First Class Post Graduate Degree (including Integrated PG Degrees) in Biophysics/ Biochemistry/Biotechnology or any other branch of Life/Biological/Physical Science OR Second Class Post Graduate Degree in Biological/Life/Physical Sciences with Ph.D.
Desirable Experience : Hands-on Experience in Molecular techniques, cell culture, animal handling, tissue engineering, biomaterials/ scaffold fabrication, Experience in bone regeneration models and basic molecular biology techniques will be an advantage. An experience of 1-2 years and independent research fellowship (NET/GATE etc) will be given preference.
Max age : 35 years (Relaxations as per ICMR rules)
Project Technical Staff-I (01 post)
Salary : Rs. 18,000/- pm + 20% HRA
Essential Qualification : Three-year Graduate Degree in any field of Biological/Life Sciences with one year experience in laboratory work.
Desirable Experience : Experience in basic molecular biology techniques, data entry, knowledge of MS Office (MS Excel, Word, Power Point) and statistical methods/software
Max Age : 28 years (Relaxations as per ICMR rules)
