VISUAL INSPECTION WITH ACETIC ACID FOR CERVICAL CANCER SCREENING- AN EFFECTIVE STRATEGY IN LOW-RESOURCE SETTINGS

A simple screening technique using an inexpensive agent dramatically reduced deaths related to cervical cancer in a population of Indian women. Visual inspection with acetic acid or vinegar (VIA), conducted by non medical personnel trained to deliver basic healthcare, cut the death rate by 31%. This strategy is effective and can be implemented on a broad scale in low-income countries. "There was almost no over diagnosis, it doesn't require a laboratory, and it can be widely implemented in the lowest-resource settings, such as India," If implemented nationally in India, it could prevent 22,000 cervical cancer deaths. If taken globally to the lowest-resource countries, it could prevent around 72,000 deaths in the developing world.

Lipid-based drug delivery systems have been investigated in various studies and shown their potential in controlled and targeted drug delivery. Pharmacosomes are amphiphilic phospholipid complexes of drugs bearing active hydrogen that bind to phospholipids. Pharmacosomes impart better biopharmaceutical properties to the drug, resulting in improved bioavailability. As the system is formed by combining drug (pharmakon) to carrier(soma), they are termed as pharmacosomes. Depending upon the chemical structure of the drug lipid complex they may exist in ultrafine vesicular, micellar and hexagonal aggregate. Any drug having an active hydrogen group(-COOH,-OH etc) can be esterified to lipids, resulting in amphiphillic compound. In general two methods have been employed to prepare pharmacosomes. These are hand shaking method and ether injection method. Developing the pharmacosomes of the drug has been found to improve the absorption and minimize the gastro-intestinal toxicity. Pharmacosomes have been prepared for various non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, proteins, cardiovascular and antineoplastic drug. The drug is released from pharmacosome by hydrolysis (including enzymatic). This article reviews the potential of pharmacosomes as a controlled and targeted drug delivery system and highlights the methods of preparation and characterization.

Thalidomide, removed from clinical use because of severe teratogenicity, is back. In a comeback that has proceeded with remarkable speed, the drug that adversely affected more than 10,000 infants just over four decades ago now seems to be a lifesaver for patients with advanced plasma cell malignancies. Thalidomide and its immunomodulatory (IMiDs) analogs (lenalidomide, CC-4047, ACTIMID) are a novel class of compounds with numerous effects on the body’s immune system, some of which are thought to mediate the anticancer and anti- inflammatory results observed in humans. Thalidomide is currently being used experimentally to treat various cancers and inflammatory diseases. Immunomodulatory activities along with anti-angiogenic, anti-proliferative,and pro-apoptotic properties are thought to mediate the IMiDs’antitumor responses observed in relapsed and refractory multiple myeloma and some solid tumor cancers. This has led to their use in various oncology clinical trials.

Studies indicate that slightly over half of all cases of infertility are a result of female conditions, while the rest are caused by either sperm disorders or unidentified factors. Infertility in female is very often observed. It is inability to conceive and produce the child. ART (Assisted Reproductive Technology) has been carried out such as IVF, ICSI but common people cannot afford the cost of such procedures. Various allopathic, Ayurvedic and other alternatives medicines and physiotherapy with acupuncture are been effective to enhance the pregnancy and these drugs and exercises will even prevent the recurrent abortions. In this regard the present review is aimed to provide all the necessary information regarding the effective method for treatment of female infertility.
