                                    Serendipity

Some drugs or new uses of known drugs were discovered by accident either in lab or by investigation. And this type of accidental discovery of the drug is known as serendipity.

E.g.,

The antibacterial action of penicillin was first noted by Fleming in 1929 in culture of bacteria that was contaminated by fungus.

 

Antipyretic properties of acetanilide was discovered .when an error was made where instead of prescribed naphthalene the patient was given acetanilide for intestinal parasite and drug caused decrease in temperature.

 

Chlorthaizide was an unexpected product of organic synthesis to obtain new compound related to dichlorphenamide. a potent inhibitor of carbonyl anhydride used as diuretics.
