Bijapur district is one of the Twenty Eight districts of Chhattisgarh State and Bijapur town is the administrative headquarter of this district. It was earlier part of Dantewada District. The Bijapur district occupies the southernmost part of Chhattisgarh state. The district is bound on north and northeast of its parent district, i.e. Dantewada district.

The princely state of Bastar was established around 1324 AD, when Annama Deva, brother of the last Kakatiya King, Pratapa Rudra Deva (r. 1290-1325), left Warangal and established his kingdom at Bastar under the tutelage of local goddess, ‘Dantheshwari’, who still is the tutelary deity of Bastar region, her famous Dantheshwari Temple stands today at Danthewada, also named after her.

Kondagaon is prevalent in the past, that its ancient name was Kandanar. It is said that the Marar people were going to Golade carriage, then the vehicle was stuck in the vines of tubers coming from the old Narayanpur road near the present Gandhi Chowk of Kondagaon. Bastar District is a district of the state of Chhattishgarh in central India. Jagdalpur is the district headquarter. The district has an area of 4029.98 km. Bastar District is located in Chhattishgarh in the central parts of India. Bastar District, before splitting districts, was one of the largest districts in India. The district covers an area of around 6596.90 sq km. Bastar District is located in the southern part of Chhattishgarh and is situated at a height of 2000 ft plateau from sea level.

District Dakshin Bastar Dantewada has been carved out of the erstwhile Bastar District on 25th May 1998. District has been further bifurcated in the yeasr 2007 and 2012 resulting in New Districts Bijapur and Sukma respectively.
