Girijananda Chowdhury Institute of Pharmaceutical Science (GIPS) was established in the year 2007 as the first non-government Pharmacy institute in the state of Assam under the aegis of Shrimanta Shankar Academy (SSA). The institution is affiliated to, Assam Science and Technology University, Assam, approved by All India Council of Technical Education (AICTE), New Delhi and recognized by Pharmacy Council of India (PCI). The B.Pharm programme is accredited by National Board of Accreditation (NBA).  The College is constantly seeking to upgrade the quality of its education and actively participates in research to remain on the cutting edge.

The Government of India has declared NIPER as an 'Institute of National Importance'. It is an autonomous body set up under the aegis of Department of Pharmaceuticals, Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilizers, Government of India. The Institute is conceived to provide leadership in pharmaceutical sciences and related areas not only within the country, but also to the countries in South East Asia, South Asia and Africa. NIPER is a member of Association of Indian Universities and Association of Commonwealth Universities.
