This Institute came into existence on 1st April,1976 when the India Centre of JALMA was officially handed over to the Govt. of India and subsequently to the Indian Council of Medical Research. This was named as Central JALMA Institute for Leprosy in 1976 and has been renamed as "National Jalma Institute of Leprosy and other Mycobacterial Diseases" in 2005 to reflect its broader research areas. This Institute was originally established as "India Centre of JALMA" in 1966 and was managed by a Tokyo based voluntary organisation -JALMA (Japanese Leprosy Mission for Asia). Indian Council of Medical Research, an autonomous body under the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, Govt. of India. The objective of establishing this centre is to carry out scientific evaluation of herbal medicines, both from codified and non-codified systems. The centre will also conduct studies on diseases of regional importance and the utility of traditional medicines in treatment of these diseases.

The Clinical Trials Registry - India (CTRI) is an online system for registration of all clinical trials being conducted in the country. This web based system (ctri.nic.in) has its headquarters at the National Institute of Medical Statistics (NIMS), Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR). It serves as a platform for registering all clinical trials on health products including drugs, devices, vaccines, herbal drugs etc. The registration of trials in CTRI is free of cost and crucial information of these registered clinical trials is freely searchable from the CTRI site. The CTRI currently registers interventional trials as well as BA/BE and observational studies. While the mandate is to register trials prospectively, the CTRI also registers ongoing and completed trials. The primary objective of the registry is to enhance transparency, accountability and accessibility of clinical trials and their results. However, there are several other benefits as well.
