The Institute’s research focus is on animal genetics and genomics, transgenic technology, reproductive technology, infectious diseases, nutritional enrichment, and bioinformatics. The Institute aims at translational r esearch leading to genetic enhancement of Indian Livestock species and development of novel vaccines, diagnostics and improved therapeutic molecules for farm animals. The Institute plans to promote bio entrepreneurship by providing supportive and stimulati ng academic and creative environment for commercial tenants involved in the development of farm animal based products and services.

    Govt. of Himachal Pradesh took up initiative in early seventies to set up a CSIR lab to make prudential use of the natural resources of the region. After several levels of discussions a formal request was made by then Chief Minister of HP to Vice President, CSIR in 1982 for initiating the matter, and giving final shape to the proposal.
