The Tata Medical Center (TMC) is a multispecialty institution for tertiary cancer care located in New Town, Kolkata. Tata Translational Cancer Research Centre (TTCRC), the research arm of TMC, is within a dedicated academic building in the same campus. At TTCRC, a multidisciplinary team of clinicians, scientists and industry professionals collaborate to develop a systems medicine approach in cancer research. This approach is focussed on developing innovative, indigenous, cost-effective and equitable strategies to improve cancer diagnosis, develop treatments that match disease characteristics and are adapted to treatment response and identify prognostic and predictive disease biomarkers.
Post : Research Assistant / Senior Research Assistant in Organoid Laboratory (SOLi3D group) at TTCRRC
The Positions and reporting
Candidate’s primary responsibility will be to continue, optimise and extend ongoing work on developing, establishing, maintaining and characterizing tumour organoid cultures from patient tissue samples. The techniques will include but not limited to clinical sample processing, organoid culture, high throughput confocal microscopic imaging, extractions of biomolecules (DNA, RNA, Protein) and quality checks, sample preparation for histological analysis, NGS and protein mass spectrometry, drug response testing and other cell biology assays as needed. This will involve working closely with the colleagues from SOLi3D team, hospital’s multidisciplinary clinical teams, the biorepository unit and other colleagues from different groups at TTCRC. The candidates will need to plan and perform hands-on experiments, record and analyse data, participate and present data/papers in regular group meetings, national conferences and prepare scientific reports and manuscripts. Each of the post holders will have a designated desk and computer. The appointed candidates will report to the team lead of SOLi3D group.
Educational qualification : MSc/MTech in any stream of Life Sciences, Biotechnology, Cell & Molecular Biology, Biochemistry and Pharmacology
Relevant experience : Minimum 1 yr
Description of Relevant experience’:
(A) Essential :
(i) Extensive experience in mammalian cell culture techniques;
(ii) Familiarity with DNA, RNA and protein extraction techniques, quality check, qRT-
PCR and Western Blot
(iii) Familiarity with good laboratory practices
(B) Preferable but not essential:
(i) Experience with patient samples handling
(ii) Experience with 3D (spheroid/organoid/organ-on-chip) cell culture models
(iii) Experience in high throughput drug screening assays
(iv) Experience in automated high throughput confocal imaging
(v) Experience in hydrogel bioprinting
(vi) Experience in automated liquid handler/digital dispenser use
(vii) Knowledge of LIMS (e.g., LabVantage) use for biobanking clinical samples
(viii) Knowledge of advanced MS Excel, R programming, Image analysis software

Selection of candidate : Only shortlisted candidates will be called for an interview. Based on their interview performance, the recruiting panel will select the successful candidates.
Appointment nature and tenure : The position is sanctioned regular positions of the institute, funded by an intramural core grant to TTCRC by Tata Medical Center Trust. However, appointment of the successful candidate to the position will initially be for 1 year. Further renewal of contract is subject to satisfactory performance assessed through periodic appraisals.
Retainership : Research Assistant level I/II: INR 25,000- 28,000 per month, consolidated. No HRA will be provided. Health insurance will be covered as per institute policy. The organization keeps right to change the above amounts/benefits at any point of time. The actual retainership amount of the candidate will be according to the payment scale guideline for the respective position at TTCRC and commensurate to the candidate’s relevant experience for the role and interview performance.
