Job for Director in School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences at UCI

The University of California, Irvine (UCI or UC Irvine) invites applications and nominations for the position of Director and Founding Dean, Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences. The new school is under development will be part of the Susan and Henry Samueli College of Health Sciences, which is comprised of four units: the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences, a program in population health, and the schools of medicine and nursing. The college is part of an integrated UC Irvine Health system that also encompasses UCI’s clinics and Orange County’s only academic medical center.

The university seeks an accomplished leader and scholar with nationally and internationally recognized research, significant experience in diverse administrative and leadership roles, and a distinguished academic record that warrants appointment at the level of professor with tenure. The Founding Dean will have primary responsibility for building a world-class school partnering with the current Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences as the foundation, focusing on cutting edge research and training in both clinical and basic sciences, as well as leading the development of an innovative Pharm.D. degree program. It is expected that this growth will be fueled by the recruitment of a number of new faculty members, according the vision of the Founding Dean.

The Founding Dean will hold a full-time, fiscal-year appointment in addition to an academic appointment in the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences and will report directly to the Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor, Dr. Enrique Lavernia. In order to ensure focused coordination of the clinical, academic, and research components of all aspects of UC Irvine Health, the Founding Dean will report on a day-to-day basis to the Interim Vice Chancellor of Health Affairs, Dr. Alan Goldin. The Founding Dean will manage the Chair of the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences and will collaborate with the Chancellor, Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor, other campus-wide vice chancellors, deans and department chairs at UCI, and with colleagues across the University of California system.

This individual will be a visionary, collegial, and entrepreneurial leader with the foresight and courage to break new ground. As the chief administrative officer of the school, the Founding Dean will provide strategic vision for the creation and, ultimately, the operational leadership of the school. We seek someone with administrative leadership proficiency in a large-scale or complex program, preferably in an academic setting. The equivalent level of relevant industry leadership experience will be considered. His/her background will include significant knowledge from diverse administrative and leadership roles. The Founding Dean will address complex topics, giving special attention to promoting diversity and inclusivity while endeavoring to create an environment and structure that advances scholarship, education, and service, promoting these initiatives on campus and beyond.

Candidate Profile
The qualified candidate will have successful fundraising experience with the ability to establish and maintain strong relationships with donors, will have a commitment to strong, prudent financial leadership, and will have excellent communication skills, including the ability to represent the school in an increasingly complex healthcare environment.

The candidate must have earned a research-focused doctorate, eligible for appointment at a full professor level in an Academic Senate title in the school. Salary and benefits will be competitive, commensurate with the selected candidate’s background and experience, and includes access to faculty housing.
