Post-doctoral fellow openings at University of Maryland, School of Pharmacy

Post-Doctoral Fellow Openings at University of Maryland, School of Pharmacy

University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) : UMB is a thriving academic health center combining cutting-edge biomedical research with exceptional patient care. Located in the city of Baltimore, UMB’s campus consists of over 71 acres and 62 buildings. The University of Maryland, Baltimore complies with all applicable federal and state regulations regarding nondiscrimination and affirmative action; all applicants will receive full consideration.

The Pearson Lab at the University of Maryland School of Pharmacy, Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences, is seeking up to three (3) highly motivated postdoctoral fellows to join our team. Our lab integrates nanotechnology and immunoengineering to treat immune dysregulation in conditions such as sepsis, infection, allergy, and autoimmunity. Supported by multiple NIH grants, AFRL, and industry collaborations, we offer an exciting and collaborative environment with opportunities for leadership, project management, mentoring, and career development.

Qualifications and Application Process : The Pearson Lab is seeking fellows that have or will receive a PhD degree for an anticipated start date of July 1, 2025 - January 1, 2026.

(1) Translational Immunology Fellow - This fellow will lead a project focused on developing nanoparticle-based immunotherapies for the treatment of polymicrobial sepsis. Key responsibilities include in vivo studies using the cecal ligation and puncture (CLP) model of sepsis, management of mouse colonies, isolation and culture of primary immune cells and tissues, and execution of multidimensional flow cytometry, confocal microscopy, and gene/protein expression analysis. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in immunology, in vivo mouse models, and mechanistic evaluation of therapeutics.
Anticipated start date : July 1. 2025.

(2) En Route Care Fellow - This fellow will lead the development of an immunomodulatory hydrogel system with embedded nanoparticles to enhance wound healing and prevent polymicrobial wound infections (e.g. Escherichia coii, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Staphylococcus aureus). The fellow will develop and optimize antimicrobial responses of hydrogels and nanoparticles, assess macrophage modulation and perform wound healing assays in vitro, evaluate hydrogel efficacy in mouse wound infection models, and analyze local and systemic immune modulation. Prior experience in biomaterials, wound healing, and rodent infection models is highly desirable.
Anticipated start date : January 1. 2026.

(3) Polymer Chemistry and Drug Delivery Fellow - This fellow will focus on the design, synthesis, and characterization of novel polymers for immunomodulatory applications, including the formulation of nanoparticles for targeted delivery. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in polymer chemistry, particularly in the synthesis of well-defined polymers using techniques such as atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP), ring- opening polymerization, or step-growth polymerization. Experience with bioconjugation chemistry, functionalization of polymers with bioactive moieties, and polymer-protein interactions is also desirable. While experience in nanoparticle formulation and characterization would be beneficial, a deep understanding of polymer structure- function relationships and how they influence biological activity is paramount.
Anticipated start date : January 1. 2026.

Compensation for this position will follow NIH stipend levels and will include access to UMB-health and dental benefits. The fellow is expected to have a strong publication record, capacity to work independently as well as within a group setting, and thoroughly plan and execute research. Applying for independent grants and fellowships is encouraged.
