Project title : Smart Diagnostics of Rotating Machinery: A Digital Twin Approach for Industries using Physics-Based Simulation and AI/ML

About the project : Rotating machinery plays an important role across industrial sectors such as manufacturing, power, and transportation. However, the presence of compound faults such as bearing inner and outer race/rolling element faults and misalignment makes fault diagnosis challenging under varying speeds, loads, and lubrication. Existing methods like FFT and RMS often fail to detect these faults in real-world, nonstationary conditions. This project proposes the development of a hybrid digital twin framework for the detection of multiple coexisting faults in rotating machinery. A physics-based simulation model will be created to reproduce vibration and acoustic signals for different compound fault cases under variable operating conditions. These simulations will be synchronized with real-time experimental vibration and acoustics data acquired from a Machine Fault Simulator. The advanced signal processing methods will be applied to the experimental data to extract fault-relevant signal components. These features will be classified using a two-stage machine learning pipeline, identifying faulty modes and linking them to simulation reference signatures for the fault characterization and remaining useful life (RUL) prediction purposes. The project will also develop a Graphic User Interface (GUI)-based diagnostic toolkit capable of real-time input, visualization, fault characterization, and prediction of RUL.

The proposed system will be made for use in India’s MSME sector. It aligns with national priorities, including Make in India, Atmanirbhar Bharat, Sangam Digital Twin Initiative, and Industry 4.0, enabling self-reliant and technologically advanced condition monitoring frameworks aligned with the future of smart manufacturing. By combining analytical modelling, experimental validation, advanced signal processing, and intelligent fault classification, the project aims to provide a scalable, explainable, and affordable condition monitoring solution for industrial rotating machinery.

Essential Qualifications & Experience : Four years Bachelor’s Degree in Natural or Agricultural Sciences / Master’s Degree in Natural or Agricultural Sciences / BVSc / B.Pharm or Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering or Technology or Medicine or from a recognized University or equivalent.
and
4 years’ experience in R&D in Industrial and Academic Institutions or S&T Organisations and Scientific activities and services OR Master’s Degree in Engineering or Technology from a recognized University or equivalent; and Two years’ experience in R&D in Industrial and Academic Institutions or S&T Organisations and Scientific activities and services OR Doctoral Degree in Science /Engineering/ Technology / Pharma / MD / Master of Surgery from a recognized University or equivalent

Job Profile :
1. Doing independent research towards completion of the Project.
2. Writing Project Progress Reports.
3. Writing Papers, Proposals, and Patents as suggested by the PI.
4. Assisting in Teaching activities.
5. Assisting in supervising MTech and PhD students working in the relevant field.
6. Making field visits to take data for the project

Pay Details : Consolidated salary Rs.57000.00/- p.m. + HRA
