The history of the IIT system dates back to 1946 when a committee was set up by Hon'ble Sir Jogendra Singh, Member of the Viceroy's Executive Council, Department of Education, Health and Agriculture to consider the setting up of Higher Technical Institutions for post war industrial development in India. The 22 member committee headed by Sri N.R.Sarkar, in its report, recommended the establishment of four Higher Technical Institutions in the Eastern, Western, Northern and Southern regions, possibly on the lines of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, USA, with a number of secondary institutions affiliated to it.

Project Title : Metagenomic assessment of microbial diversity, functionality and metabolic activities in polymetallic nodules and associated sediments and water of Central Indian Ocean Basin(ANW)

Consolidated Compensation : Upto Rs.58000(depending upon qualification & experience)

Qualifications and Relevant Experience : Research associates may be fixed at a consolidated amount at one of the 3 pay levels given below depending upon the qualification and experience. The Institute/Organization concerned may decide the level in which a particular associate should be placed based on the experience.

The Essential Qualification (EQ) for RA is as follows : Ph.D./MD/MS/MDS or equivalent degree or having 3 years of research, teaching and design and development experience after MVSc/M.Pharm/ME/M.Tech with at least one research paper in Science Citation Indexed (SCI) journal.

Desirable Criteria : Thorough knowledge on microbial ecology, biogeochemistry, metagenomics and related bioinformatic approaches. The candidate must be well versed with metagenome assembled genome reconstruction and related pathway analysis. Experience on using nalytical techniques pertaining to ion chromatography, gas chromatography, spectrometry, etc. is necessary.

Tenure : 24 Months or the termination of the project, whichever is earlier.
