Higher education in Tripura had a late start. Maharaja Bir Bikram (MBB) College, the first degree college in the State, started functioning under the University of Calcutta only in 1947. Not that there was no attempt in the past in Princely Tripura to establish any higher educational institution. As early as 1901, Radhakishore Manikya made an attempt to establish a degree college in the-then tiny capital town Agartala; but as the proposal did not fulfill the necessary requirements, it did not get approval from the Calcutta University. In 1937, Bir Bikramkishore Manikya, the last Maharaja of Tripura, had planned for establishing a college again at Agartala and an area of 254 acres of land, consisting of undulated tilla land having interposed lakes almost all around, in the eastern part of Agartala, was earmarked for that under the “Vidyapattan Scheme”.

Defence Research & Development Establishment (DRDE), Gwalior is a premier laboratory under Defence Research & Development Organisation (DRDO). It is engaged in R&D activities on detection, protection and decontamination of chemical and biological agents. DRDE provides excellent opportunity to young and motivated researchers to pursue a research work in chemical and life sciences. The core competence of DRDE indudes: synthesis, evaluation and process development for toxicants and antidotes; detection and analysis of chemicals at trace levels; development of sensors for chemical and biological agents: toxicity studies and safety evaluation of chemicals in vitro and in vivo: DRDE is also engaged in the development of immunotogical and molecular detection systems for bacterial and viral agents of defence importance. Development of insect repellents and vector management strategies are also undertaken to prevent vector borne diseases. DRDE is actively engaged in bioremediation of organic waste at low temperature by microbial degradation. DRDE is the only laboratory in India working in above area of technologies. DRDE is also one of the few laboratories in the world, accredited by Organization for Prohibition of Chemical Warfare (OPCW).

The International Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (ICGEB), established in 1983, is an international, intergovernmental organisation conceived as a Centre of excellence for research, training and technology transfer to industry in the field of biotechnology to promote sustainable global development. The Centre conducts innovative research in life sciences and strengthens the research capability of its over 60 Member States through training, funding programs and advisory services. IISER Tirupati is the sixth Institute in the chain of IISERs established by the Govt. of India under the Ministry of HRD for imparting quality education in basic sciences and for setting up state-of-the-art research facilities for frontline and cutting-edge research in science. It started academic activity started in August 2015 in the spacious transit campus located at Sri Rama Engineering College, Rami Reddy Nagar, Karkambadi Road, Tirupati.

BITS Pilani Goa Campus started functioning in August 2004 and was formally inaugurated by Hon'ble Prime Minster of India, Dr. Manmohan Singh on May 5, 2006.  The Campus is spread over an area os 180 acres and the location of the campus is unique with respect to the scenic beauty and panoramic view of picturesque surrounding with Zuari river, hillocks, waterways and forest. The Campus is about 25km south of Panjim, 10 km west of Vasco-da-Gama, and 22 km north of Madgaon. It is 5.5 km east of Goa Airport, along National Highway - 17B, bypass road.
