Established on October 1, 1933 as University Department of Chemical Technology  of the University of Bombay, with the noble intention of advancing India’s knowledge reserves in chemical science and technology, the Institute has grown to become a premier university devoted to education, training, research and industrial collaboration in chemical engineering, chemical technology, applied chemistry, pharmacy, biotechnology and bio-processing.

The National Institute of Plant Genome Research (formerly known as National Centre for Plant Genome Research is an autonomous institution aided by the Department of Biotechnology, Government of India. The Institute's establishment coincides with the 50th anniversary of India's independence as well as birth anniversary of Prof. (Dr.) J. C. Bose. The formal announcement was made on November 30th 1997. This Institute has already placed India among the major contributors to plant genomics.

The Manipur Technical University (MTU) is the first technical university of the state established on 23rd April 2016 under The Manipur Technical University Act, 2016 (Manipur Act No.8 of 2016). It is included in the UGC list of Universities under Section 2(f) of the UGC Act 1956 and empowered to award degrees under Section 22 of the UGC Act, 1956 through its departments. All technical institutions operating in the state will affiliate to MTU in due course of time. The university will be in the fifth academic session during the academic year 2020-2021.
