    CSIR-IHBT is one of the 38 national laboratories of the Council of Scientific Industrial Research.     The Molecular Biophysics Unit (MBU) at the Indian Institute of Science was founded in 1971 by Prof. G. N. Ramachandran. The Unit is currently engaged in frontline research in contemporary Molecular Biophysics and Structural Biology.  The research activities in the Unit focus on the structure, conformation and interactions of biomolecules, with the main objective of explaining biological activity in molecular terms.  The unit has grown over a quarter of century, during this period, more than 200 young scientists have obtained their Ph.D. degrees and the number of research publications exceeds 1000. Seven faculty members have received prestigious S. S. Bhatnagar prize; eight members are fellows of the Indian Academy of Sciences and seven members are fellows of the Indian National Science Academy.

    Presidency University has a unique place in history. It was one of the first institutes of Western-type higher education in Asia. In 1817, a group of enlightened Indians and Englishmen set up the Hindoo College.This was taken over the British Government in 1855 as the College of the Bengal Presidency, and placed in 1857 under the newly founded Calcutta University.  Over the next hundred years and more, Presidency College was Bengal’s pre-eminent centre of higher learning. Although a Constituent College of Calcutta University, it preserved a tradition of research matched by few universities in India. This gave a unique dimension to its undergraduate teaching.

    The National Institute of Plant Genome Research (formerly known as National Centre for Plant Genome Research) is an autonomous institution aided by the Department of Biotechnology, Government of India. The Institute's establishment coincides with the 50th anniversary of India's independence as well as birth anniversary of Prof. (Dr.) J. C. Bose. The formal announcement was made on November 30th 1997. This Institute has already placed India among the major contributors to plant genomics. It is hoped that in coming years, the ongoing efforts of NIPGR will allow India to emerge as one of the most important national and international resource institutes for material, knowledge and technologies in the areas of functional, structural, evolutionary and applied genomics of plants, including crop plants.
