Tuberculosis (TB) control activities are implemented in the country for more than 50 years. The National TB Programme (NTP) was launched by the Government of India in 1962 in the form of District TB Centre model involved with BCG vaccination and TB treatment. In 1978, BCG vaccination was shifted under the Expanded Programme on Immunisation.

Brahmaputra Valley Fertilizers Corporation Limited (BVFCL) was incorporated on 5th April 2002 after segregation of Namrup units in Assam from Hindustan Fertilizer Corporation Limited (HFCL). The BCG Vaccine Laboratory, Chennai is a sub-ordinate office of the Directorate General of Health Services under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare of the Government of India. It was established on 1st May, 1948. The activities of this Laboratory are as follows Manufacture of Freeze Dried BCG Vaccine for the control of Childhood Tuberculosis and Tuberculous Meningitis in children and supply to Expanded Programme of Immunization (EPI) of the Government of India and to other needy medical faculties/ Hospitals
