The erstwhile Garhwa Subdivision of Palamau district consisting of 8 Blocks was separated from Palamau district as an independent district  Garhwa with effect from 1st April 1991. It is situated on Southwest corner of Palamau division, which lies between 23060 and 24039 N latitude and 83022’ and 84000 E longitude. The ECHS Central Organisation is located at Delhi and functions under the Chief of Staff Committee (COSC) through AG and DGDC&W in Army HQ. The Central organisation is headed by Managing Director, ECHS, a serving Major General. There are 28 Regional Centres ECHS and 426 ECHS Polyclinics. ECHS is also an attached office of Dept of Ex-Servivemen Welfare (DoESW), Ministry of Defence (MoD) as are Directorate General Resettlement(DGR) and Kendriya Sainik Board (KSB).

As per Government of India UO No. O.IV-3/2020-Pers.II dated 03/05/2021 & 19/07/2021, CRPF has been declared as Nodal Force for conducting the selection process for filling up the vacancies in Paramedical Cadre in CAPFs & Assam Rifles from the retired CAPF as well as Ex-Armed force personnel for appointment on contractual basis for a period of one year against the vacancies available in Paramedical cadre.
